Really 2 ½ stars….but rounded up cause I think it may be a case of “it’s not you, it’s me”.Barrel Proof is the 3rd installment in the Irish & Whiskey series and sad to say my interest and enjoyment took a bit of a nose dive in this one. I wasn’t feeling either the relationship or the story. It started out pretty good, with Jamie, Aiden and Danny following hot on Mel’s heels to Cuba to either help her take down a terrorist or find out that she IS a terrorist. Unfortunately, the initial excitement gave way to a very tedious terrorist plot that often stretched the bounds of credulity and eventually devolved into mind numbing – please make it end now – boredom.
Early on Aiden finds out that Jamie was aware that his deceased husband and partner were being leveraged by the terrorist Renaud, and was in fact working in secrecy under Mel’s orders to investigate. And here comes the Drama Llama. Aiden, being Aiden (i.e. self-absorbed, emotionally immature, histrionic) runs wild with the Betrayal Card. Jamie knew that Gabe & Tom (husband & partner) had conspired with terrorist (Renaud) for 5 MONTHS – 5 MONTHS THAT THEY WERE SLEEPING TOGETHER!!!! 5 months during which they’ve been sleeping together and Aiden has been insisting it’s CASUAL and constantly throwing in Jamie’s face “drinks with Nic, dinner with Scott, hors d’oeuvres with Tom, Dick and Harry….and somehow he thinks that he is entitled to some level of loyalty whereby Jaime goes against his direct supervisor and shares classified FBI information with someone he’s having CASUAL sex with?????? Jamie didn’t say it, so let me, “@#$% YOU”!
So, Aiden has a Scarlet O’Hara hissy and toddles off on a solo assignment because “I still love you but I’m soooo betrayed and I have to deal with my anger” (And did I say, “@#$% YOU”??? Cause seriously @#$% you and the horse you rode in on and take your “goodbye sex” with you). Naturally Aiden’s solo assignment just so happens to put him smack dab in the middle of Renaud’s terrorist plot du jour. The story when it makes sense is a bit cliched and predictable and when it doesn’t make sense it’s sort of…. wait, what? Why would anyone do that???? The relationship - other than God Bless Jamie – I guess he can stand Aiden because he definitely hit my last nerve -does have a very happy ending and at times gets ridiculously schmaltzy.
Against my better judgement – it looks like my OCD is going to win out and I’m going to read the final novella and finish up the series. I’m probably going to regret it – it’s a Danny and Mel side story – and Danny is an even bigger drama queen than Aiden – so this ought to be good.

Barrel Proof Agents Irish and Whiskey Book 3 edition by Layla Reyne Romance eBooks Reviews
Oh man! Man oh man, the cliffhanger the last book left me at! I have never been gladder (its a word now) to have read this whole series in a go. I would've legit died of anticipation. Obviously I never saw the cover because, well, I don't think I saw the cover of any book in this series after the first one. Had no time, was too busy trying to figure who's the hero and who's the conspirator.
There were a lot of things I liked about this book, I'm going to try and list them down in no particular order whatsoever
1. The "I love you's."
2. The confrontation of Melissa and the uncle.
3. Daniel's anger towards Melissa, his bitterness and his 'I love you.'
4. The way Jamie and Aidan dealt with their separation.
5. The reflection of Aidan's experience and age in a corresponding maturity about how staying together would make them bitter and staying apart and forgiving before moving on is the better path and the parallel that is drawn with the bitterness in Dan and Mel's relationship. That was awesome!
6. The overall plot about the kidnapping and the whole shebang. WOWza!
7. Uncle Jamie! (I may or maynot have cried here.)
Gah! Can't remember everything. But seriously loved this story.
5 stars because I couldn't give it more!
All my love,
sri
This is the last book in the series I renamed " The Hot Geek and the Hotter Agent". I knew it would be good, but oh my giddy aunts, that was spectacular! It was a roller coaster ride from start to finish. Every question I had was answered, every villain slain, every lover well loved.
Here we get not only Jamie, Aidan, Mel and Danny but two new members - Nic aka Aidan's roadblock and Lauren aka Jamie's mini-me. Together they make up a Suicide Squad because what they manage to achieve is almost impossible and extremely dangerous but they all survive with their parts intact.
This story clearly shows how easy it is to frame, blackmail or eliminate people who've outgrown their usefulness. Irish and Whiskey are racing against the clock to stop a terrorist from completing his agenda and when the truth comes out in the end there is only sadness that one lonely man who was wronged turned into a despicable monster beyond redemption. Through all the tribulations Aidan and Jamie stay true to themselves and their love for each other and when the fight is over and the smoke is cleared the threat is gone, the life as they know it is over and the circle of life begins anew.
It was a very enjoyable and thoroughly satisfying read! I highly recommend it!
The start of this book is awful...as in rip your heart out of your chest, crush it in your palm, throw it on the floor and stomp on it awful! So emotionally devastating. Then the action picks up and the book hurtles through to the climax. It’s action packed and wraps up the overriding story arc from books one and two.
There are some shocks, some returns of secondary characters from previous books (I’m hoping that means we’ll see more of them in a spin off or something.)
The book drags a bit towards the end and we don’t really get a satisfying explanation of how everything wraps up. Huge issues are created as a result of the crisis but we never get told how they are resolved without lots of good guys ending up in jail. Can’t say much more without spoilers but everything that happens in the final chapter, an epilogue of sorts, needed way more detail.
Sorry to see this series as currently constituted end. Hope we get more of the other characters in some way, shape or form. I think Nik and Cam need their own books.
Really 2 ½ stars….but rounded up cause I think it may be a case of “it’s not you, it’s me”.
